Do you need justice for forgiveness?

I thought this was something appropriate to share at a time when many are in a state of prayer and reflection. One of the things that I am struggling with and have thus decided to explore as part of my little project is forgiveness. I honestly have no idea how I'm going to make myself accomplish this one. Jumping out of a plane and finishing a marathon seem more plausible to me right now than that. But this project is more than just about conquering challenges and diving into adventure. It's ultimately about being the best person that I can be, and I know that part of that means not allowing myself to be weighed down by contempt. But as anyone who's ever been terribly wronged knows, this is one incredibly difficult thing to do. I thought one step to getting there would be to explore what different faiths have to say about forgiveness. There are a series of clips by the Fetzer Institute (a fascinating organization, by the way) which I found on YouTube. They're all pretty riveting, but today I thought I'd share this clip which asks, "Do you need justice for forgiveness?"

  1. Hi Celine, Forgiving is not one of my strong suits. Whenever I talk of vengeance, a friend always reminds me that it's a poison meant for others that we end up swallowing ourselves. Anyhoo, in case you're interested the Dalai Lama will be in the city in May for a series of talks at Radio City Music Hall. My friends & I are attending the public talk on May 23. Here's the link: http://www.dalailamany.org/

  2. Hi Aggie! Thank you for reminding me about that! I recalled receiving that email that said the Dalai Lama would be giving a talk at Radio City Music Hall, but I didn't get a ticket because I thought I'd be in Seattle then. Turns out my May trip isn't pushing through so I just might try to see that. Thanks! Forgiveness definitely does not come easy, but I know that the anger and vengeance only hurts me in the end so it's something I know I have to do sooner or later. Hope you and I get there someday :-)
